The reason for the drip changes the answer. Here is how it works for the four most common reasons travellers book an IV drip.
Bali Belly and Dehydration
Bali Belly (travellers’ diarrhea) can drain fluids quickly through diarrhea and vomiting. When you cannot keep water down, an IV drip for dehydration replaces fluids and electrolytes directly, while medication eases nausea and cramps.
One drip is often enough to stop the dehydration cycle. If diarrhea or vomiting continues, the doctor may recommend a second session and may run a stool test, a blood count or a dengue test to find the cause. Many results come back within 24 hours. Learn what each package includes on our Bali Belly IV drip page.
Hangover Recovery
Alcohol affects sleep, digestion and fluid balance, which is why you wake up with a headache, nausea and low energy. Our hangover IV drip replaces fluids, electrolytes and vitamins so you can recover faster.
It works best as an occasional fix, not a routine after every night out. If you are planning several big nights in a row, regular water, electrolytes, food and sleep will do more for you than repeated drips.
Vitamin and Wellness Drips
Wellness drips such as Defence PLUS and Ultimate Vitality combine hydration with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Travellers on longer stays or busy itineraries often choose them for extra support.
Because these drips are not treating an illness, they need more spacing. Your body also gets these nutrients from food, so a drip adds to a healthy diet. It does not replace one.
Dengue Recovery
Dengue fever can cause serious dehydration, and fluid needs change from day to day during recovery. IV fluids for dengue are only given after a medical assessment and under close supervision. How often you receive them depends on your blood tests and how you respond. There is no general rule for this, so always follow your doctor’s plan.
How Long Does an IV Drip Take, and How Long Do the Effects Last?
Dengue Recovery
IV therapy is safe when a qualified doctor prescribes it and a trained nurse gives it with sterile equipment. Like any medical procedure, it carries risks, and those risks grow if you have drips too often or without an assessment:
- Fluid overload: too much fluid can strain the heart and kidneys.
- Vein irritation: repeated cannulas in the same area can cause pain, swelling or bruising.
- Infection: any break in the skin can let bacteria in, which is why sterile, single-use equipment matters.
- Vitamin excess: some vitamins build up in the body when given too often.
IV therapy may not be suitable if you have heart or kidney disease, high blood pressure, are pregnant or breastfeeding, have medication allergies, or take regular prescription medicine. Tell the doctor about all of these before your drip.
At Thrive Wellness, our doctors and nurses are licensed by Indonesia’s Ministry of Health (Kemenkes RI) and the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI), and we use only medication approved by BPOM, Indonesia’s food and drug authority.
Signs You Need a Doctor, Not Another Drip
If you feel you need IV therapy again and again, the drip may be treating the symptom while the cause goes on. See a doctor rather than booking another drip if you have:
- Diarrhea or vomiting that lasts more than three days
- Blood in your stool or vomit
- A high fever, or a fever that keeps coming back
- Confusion, fainting or severe dizziness
- Chest pain or difficulty breathing
- Very little urine, or very dark urine
Chest pain, difficulty breathing or confusion need emergency care straight away.
